The short version
- Lookwell looks after small things at home with the cameras you share with it in the Ring app: whether the trash bins are out, the garage door is closed, the driveway is clear, a camera is offline, how often the doorbell rang.
- No facial recognition, no license plate reading, no identifying people. Your Ring privacy zones and Ring's watermark are blacked out before anything looks at a picture, and only the small zone you drew is analyzed.
- Pictures are checked in memory and thrown away. Kept are only: the reference crops of each zone you save; while "Was this right?" is on, a check's zone crop, encrypted, for at most 24 hours; and the crops you teach Lookwell with. You can delete all of them.
- We don't sell your data, show ads, or use your pictures to train AI. Data is never combined across homes.
- Disconnect, or remove Lookwell in the Ring app, and everything we hold about your home and household is deleted.
What we collect and why
- Your Ring account ID and tokens (encrypted, AES-256), from Ring's account linking. We never see your Ring password.
- Your email, for sign-in codes (there are no passwords) and, if you turn it on, a daily email digest.
- Your cameras: the names you gave them, doorbell or camera, online/offline, battery percentage and Ring's Wi-Fi word (polled every few hours), the privacy zones (read only, to respect them; never shown), and, from setup, a few words about what each camera sees (like "driveway"; the picture isn't kept).
- Ring events: the time and type of motion and doorbell presses (with Ring's "person / vehicle / package" label when Ring sends one). Kept 30 days; daily counts longer for the weekly report.
- Zones and reference crops you draw and save (privacy zones and the watermark blacked out).
- A history of checks: when a picture was looked at, why, by whom in your household, the result and any answer. No pictures. Kept 90 days, shown under More → History.
- Alerts (30 days), your alert settings, and your devices' push subscription addresses.
- Trash bins: your pickup schedule or your town's calendar link and its dates; with the wind warning on, a ZIP or a point rounded to about 1 km.
- Household members you invite (up to 6): name, email, their alert settings, who said "I'll handle it" or answered.
Feature by feature
- Camera Health: online/offline times, battery and Ring's Wi-Fi word, and about one picture a day per camera reduced to a few numbers (sharpness, brightness, edges) compared with the camera's normal view. No picture is kept. Readings 30 days, outages and daily results 90 days.
- Doorbell Stats: ring and doorbell-motion times, as counts per day and hour. No pictures. 13 months.
- Trick-or-Treat Counter: on a night you start, visits at the door counted from ring and motion times, as counts per 15 minutes, plus the "+1" taps. No pictures at all and nothing about who came: it counts groups, not people. The share card is drawn on your phone from the numbers; a town name you type on it stays on your phone. Kept 2 years for "vs last year".
- Spot Checks (trash bins, garage door, driveway): a crop of the zone you drew, checked and discarded; the reference crops you save; bin pickup dates (13 months). The driveway check only asks whether a vehicle is there, never its plate.
- Delivery Diary: when something arrived and was picked up (13 months), a carrier guess from the truck only, and a small crop of the package spot as proof, saved only when no person is in it (30 days).
- Wind warning (trash bins): your ZIP or your location rounded to about 1 km, only if you turn it on. Only that point is sent to the US National Weather Service. When it's set, Camera Health also asks the weather service about fog, rain or snow before telling you a lens looks fogged or covered.
- Town calendar (trash bins): the calendar link you paste and the pickup dates read from it. Lookwell fetches the link once a week; the calendar's host sees a plain request from our servers, nothing about you.
You can delete any one feature's data in More → Privacy → "Delete one feature's data".
How long we keep things
- Ring events (times and types): 30 days. Alerts: 30 days. History of checks: 90 days. Weekly reports: 13 months.
- Saved "Was this right?" crops: up to 24 hours; crops you teach with: up to 180 days (and deleted at once when you turn learning off).
- Feature data: as listed above. Sign-in codes and invites: until they expire (minutes to 7 days).
- Everything: deleted right away when you disconnect or remove Lookwell in the Ring app.
Pictures and AI
Ring doesn't take pictures on request: Lookwell reads the newest picture your camera already has, at the times a check needs it (a schedule, or a couple of minutes after motion). It's decoded in memory, masked, cropped to the zone, compared with your references, and discarded. Pictures shown to you in the app come straight from Ring, masked the same way; your browser may keep them for a few minutes.
For close calls (and when you leave the option on), the zone crop only goes to a small vision model on Cloudflare Workers AI with one yes/no question about a place or object ("Is this garage door open?"). Prompts forbid describing people or reading plates. At setup, one small picture per camera is asked which places it shows. Cloudflare runs the model for us and doesn't train on it.
Sharing
Service providers only: Cloudflare (hosting, database, AI), our email provider, browser push services (no alert text passes through them), the US National Weather Service (a rounded point, only if you gave one for the wind warning) and your town's calendar host (a plain request for the link, if you use one). Household members see pictures only if you allow it, and each look is in History with their name.
Deleting
More → Privacy → "Disconnect and delete everything", or removing Lookwell in the Ring app, deletes everything right away, your household's access included. Turning off "Learn from my answers" deletes the saved crops at once. A deletion record keeps only a one-way hash and the date.
Checks can be wrong. Lookwell is not a security or safety system.
